The Shame Of It

I wrote another poem for this month’s challenge.

In this poem, a man is ashamed because his girlfriend beats him.

She gets mad a lot
that’s all. I know she
doesn’t mean it.

She’s such a gentle,
kind, sweet, lovely person.

Things just upset her
and she lashes out at me.

I could defend myself
of course. I could try
and make her stop.

But she’s so little;
short, slim, slight –
I don’t want to hurt her.

I don’t think she
knows her own strength.

I had to call in sick
at work today.
My ribs are so sore
and bruised, I can
hardly move.

I lied of course,
told them I had
a stomach bug.

What else would I say?

I’m a guy over
six feet who got
beat up by his
four foot girlfriend?
